Rajasthani Wedding Rituals



Rajasthan is well known for its magnificent lifestyle and rich cultural heritage. Taking into account the food, clothing and culture Rajasthan stands vibrant in terms of the style and royalty. Rajasthani Weddings are opulent and filled with customs and rituals. The bride and the groom can have an arranged marriage or even a love marriage but, the rituals remain the same.
During the engagement ceremony the bride and groom exchange engagement rings as a part of acceptance of each other and receive blessings from elders followed by the feast for relatives and friends.
The idol of Lord Ganesha, is worshipped before the commencement of any work according to Hindu mythology. For a successful Rajisthani wedding Lord Ganesha is worshipped for the showers of blessings.
This ceremony is popularly known as Haldi ceremony where Turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom in their respective homes. The idea behind Haldi ceremony is to cleanse the body of the bride and groom and bring out the inner glow.
v  Mehfils
An important custom in the Rajasthani wedding where the bride and groom’s family meet up in either of their homes perform their traditional dance Ghoomar. Music and food adds color to the occasion for both the families.
During this ceremony, the groom is dressed in saffron robes and a priest ties a sacred thread around the right wrist of the groom. This is followed by the Havan which will signify the acceptance of the groom to enter in married life.


After applying turmeric paste on the bride’s hand, father of the bride gives her hands to the groom signifying that it’s the groom’s responsibility. This traditional custom of the Rajasthani wedding is a called Kanyadan.
Paani Grahan          
During Paani Grahan the groom promises to take her responsibility for a lifetime.
 During the Phera ceremony the couple goes round the fire for seven times.
The bride and groom take seven steps together toward the direction of Sun God Direction which signifies to wall together in all situations in life.
 After the completion of Rajasthani wedding customscthe girl is sent along with the groom to start their life together.
